I first developed an interest in global issues in high school. After attending first year at York University in Toronto, I participated in a Canada World Youth exchange programme, during which I spent three months in Jamaica. I then enrolled in the Co-operative Programme in International Development Studies at the University of Toronto. This programme included a nine-month internship in Sudan, in Darfur and Khartoum. Upon graduating I worked in emergency aid for CARE Canada and CARE International, first in Mozambique and then in Angola, both countries in the throes of conflict. I left Angola at the end of 1992, and after a brief period in The Netherlands and Canada, returned to Mozambique to work for the United Nations as an observer during the country’s first multi-party elections. I then settled in The Netherlands where I still live. I worked for a number of Dutch NGOs, including Oxfam Novib and Hivos, before starting my own consultancy in 2005.
